When Brody and I got married, we moved into a twin home with the mindset that we would be in it for a couple years. Well, life happened and searching for a different place to live moved to the bottom of our list of things to do. We ended up living in that twin home for eleven years. We made wonderful memories and loved our time in that space. However, we casually browsed when houses would come on the market. One could say we were interested buyers, but not ready to pull the trigger on that big decision. My husband may just define it as overly picky on my part:) Each time I would walk into the entryway of a house, I would instantly know that it just wasn’t “the one.”
Brody grew up in an old house in a small town in North Dakota and together we share a love for the character and details these types of houses provide. When the “House on Almonte” came on the market, we decided to take a look. This time, I made it past the entryway! In fact, we ended going back a couple times before deciding to make an offer. After eleven years of casually searching, I just knew that she was “the one!” We loved the character of the house, the nostalgic feel of the neighborhood, and the idea of making memories in this beautiful old house. The fact that it was so old and creatively built that it made the the National Historic Registry was an added bonus!
Long story short, our offer was accepted and we moved in on the first big snowfall of the season. In fact, there was so much snow that school was cancelled, making the move a bit of a challenge. However, we took plenty of breaks that day to take in this exciting new adventure. Everly spent time running up and down this sweet neighborhood catching snowflakes in her mouth, a wonderful first memory in this new space of ours. We were excited about this place that we could call our own!
When our daughter Everly was in the NICU for four months, I spent hours upon hours watching Chip and Joanna Gaines on “Fixer Upper,” which is where my love for design grew. I don’t pretend to have all the experience or expertise, but I do love the art of it all! I truly believe you can’t go wrong if you are making it into a place that you want to spend your time. Our personal touches on this space has turned be into a true homebody! So I welcome you to join me on this journey of making this House on Almonte into our home, room by room. First step, a new paint color on the outside… more to come soon!
