My name is Dr. Erin Peterson and I am the proud author of When the Going Gets Tough! It has been such an honor to write this children’s book and I am so excited to be able to share it with the world! Books can be purchased at whenthegoinggetstoughguide.com.
My Inspiration:
I have been an educator for the past 18 years in elementary and higher education and my doctoral focus was in reading. With each educational and life experience that has occurred, my desire to one day write a children’s book has become stronger. However, I had never felt set on a topic and hoped that eventually it would manifest itself. One day while my daughter Everly and I were in the pharmacy drive through line, she said to me, “Mom, do you know what I do when I feel sad?” I of course was so interested to know! She said, “I go to my own world where there are flying unicorns and talking zebras, and that makes me happy.” In that very moment, I just knew that this would become the topic of my book… happiness! We went home and I immediately asked Everly to draw the illustrations that she visualizes as her strategy for finding happiness (see below).
Background Information:
Everly inspired me to write an interactive children’s book filled with strategies to help children create their own happiness. I was so proud of Everly in that moment and am honored to have written my first book that stemmed from a sweet and important conversation I had with my daughter. I spent the next six months brainstorming the content of this book on my way to and from completing Everly’s medical cares at school each day. The following two years has been putting these brainstorms into action. Everly’s strategy is proudly displayed in the book as Strategy #7: Visualization, along with her illustrations of her “own world.” My hope is that her strategy, along with the additional strategies included in this book, will assist other children in creating their own happiness!
